   Body Mass Index is a calculation used to asess body fatness or thinness using weight and height. Individuals can share the same BMI number but have a drastically different bodyfat percentage.

For example a bodybuilder carrying a great deal of muscle mass will measure to be the same BMI as someone of the same "thickness" with less muscle.

There are many factors that go into overall fitness and the BMI calculation is one tool used in evaluating health.
